Sicily is a fascinating island that has known many cultures.
The Greeks were among the first to visit and colonized it. Their temples still stand and we will see several of the most beautiful ones on our travels around the island. The greatest legacy of the Romans and the Arabs is to be found in some of the unusual dishes we will be sampling. The Normans were conquerors here as well: their palaces and churches have a severe but beautiful style; Palermo has many great examples. Through the centuries Germans, Austrians and Bourbons added to the layers of these ancient civilizations.
In 1861 Sicily became part of Italy, yet even today one senses immediately that there is something diffrent from the well known mainland.
As we travel through the island, we will find examples of these differences, with history and gastronomy blended together, each of them adding to our knowledge and enjoyment. |
